De-shed / De-moult

This service is suitable for double-coated breeds, such as Pugs, French Bulldogs, Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Border Collies, Huskies, Pomeranians and Spitz type breeds etc, or for any dog where shedding is a problem. These types of coat need to be thoroughly groomed out regularly, particularly when they are shedding their coats. It removes all of the loose undercoat and therefore helps to drastically reduce the shedding around the house.

Dogs with coats of this type become hot in warmer weather, because of the build up of excess undercoat. Many owners will ask their dog groomer to shave the dog in the mistaken belief that this will help to keep the dog cool and reduce the shedding. Unfortunately, shaving a dog with this type of coat causes significant damage to the coat, which may in some cases, be permanent. It damages the Guard Coat and causes the undercoat to grow back, thicker which makes the problem worse. It reduces the ability of the coat to properly insulate the dog by trapping air around the hair shafts and takes away the protective qualities of the coat, which protects the dogs skin from damage from sticks and twigs etc and also damage from the sun.

Some dogs may have patches of hair that do not grow back at all. This is a particular problem with the Nordic breeds, Chows and Pomeranians and is termed ‘coat funk’. There are other medical causes of Coat Funk, but it can be triggered by a shave down. See http://archive.constantcontact.com/fs030/1102382228594/archive/1102490730065.html

Hand stripping

Suitable for terriers and some terrier mixes. The dead or blown coat is removed by hand to enable the hair follicle to regrow a new harsh or wire coat. This specialised method of grooming helps to retain the vibrant colour and harsh texture that terrier breeds are known for. A harsh coat is waterproof and repels the dirt more easily than a clipped coat. After clipping, a terrier coat becomes soft, attracts dirt and can lose a considerable amount of colour. As this service is more specialised and more labour intensive than clipping, it is priced differently POA.
